Whether you prefer making vehicles run as smoothly as possible as an automotive service technician or you like doing the heavy lifting as a heavy equipment operator (dozer), getting your Red Seal endorsement can open up new doors for you.
Looking to get into either trade? Then you’ll want to complete your apprenticeship training and get your Red Seal certification. If you’re already an established tradesperson then you likely have heard of the Red Seal certification, but might not have gotten around to challenging the exam. This could be for a number of reasons, but it is never too late to get started.
By design, the Red Seal automotive service technician course and the Red Seal heavy equipment operator (dozer) courses will help you prepare for your Red Seal exam and ensure that you have the requisite knowledge and skills to pass the examination.
Why Do You Need a Red Seal Certification?
If you already know your trade then why would you write an exam to prove your skills now? Having a Red Seal isn’t just a widely recognized stamp of approval that you’re a qualified expert in your field, but it also provides a number of benefits, especially for immigrants.
Some of the benefits include:
-Nationwide recognition of your valuable skills and knowledge, as well as your status as a qualified tradesperson.
-Being able to work in any province or territory throughout Canada without the need for additional certifications, as the Red Seal certification is nationally recognized.
-Having a Red Seal endorsement means getting better career opportunities and likely a higher per hour salary.
Having a Red Seal certification is also compulsory for some trades in certain provinces and territories. An automotive service technician is generally classified as a compulsory trade, including in Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia, Alberta, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. A heavy equipment operator is a compulsory trade in Quebec, but it may still be mandatory in order to obtain work in other areas so it is important to contact the certification authority in your province or territory and make sure.
Getting Red Seal Certified
Before you can challenge the Red Seal exam, you need to meet a few prerequisites. These are different for each trade and may also differ between one province or territory and another. However, once you have your Red Seal certification, it is recognized nationally regardless of where you challenged the exam.
The first and most important step is getting an approved exam challenge application. To get approved, you will need to have verified documentation of trade-related work experience hours as well as at least one endorsement from an authorized instructor or tradesperson in your field. Again, the number of hours you need to complete before you can challenge the exam, and other specific prerequisites, differ between trades as well as provinces and territories. So it is best to contact the local certification authority in your province or territory to find out what the eligibility requirements are for your trade.
Regardless of the specific requirements you need to meet for your trade, preparing for any Red Seal exam is hard work. One of the biggest challenges of the Red Seal exam is that it doesn’t involve any physical demonstration of your abilities, but is a multiple question test. There is a big difference between working your trade every day and knowing how to properly explain your knowledge, abilities, and duties in words. This is why many turn to preparation courses to help them study for the exam. Ashton College offers both a Red Seal automotive service technician course and a Red Seal heavy equipment operator (dozer) course.
Once you decided to start preparing for your Red Seal exam, you will need to set aside enough time to study.
The Red Seal Automotive Service Technician Course
The Red Seal automotive service technician course takes ten weeks to complete and involves two hours of live instruction each week. There will also be various individual and/or group activities that you will need to take part in outside of instruction hours.
With the help of these activities, study aids, and practice quizzes you will be able to ensure that you have the requisite knowledge to pass the exam. After completing the exam, you will be able to:
-Explain the diagnostic and repair procedures for various automotive systems and components
-Identify the proper use of equipment and materials
-Describe safe work practices and industry-specific terms and acronyms
-Deconstruct and effectively respond to exam questions
The Red Seal Heavy Equipment Operator (Dozer) Course
It will take nine weeks to complete the Red Seal heavy equipment operator (dozer) course, during which you need to attend two hours of live instruction every week. You will also need to take part in individual and/or group activities outside of the live instruction hours.
With the help of these activities, study aids, and practice quizzes you will be able to ensure that you have the requisite knowledge to pass the exam. Some of the topics covered in this course include safety, operation, maintenance, occupational skills, and inspection. The whole course will be conducted online and you will need access to a device with an internet connection in order to attend classes and participate.
Heavy equipment operators and automotive service technicians are both highly employable trades in Canada, and each career provides unique challenges of its own. You should consider getting Red Seal certified for that edge above other tradespersons in your field and to open up new opportunities in your craft.
