In our payroll administration course, study foundational payroll practices and procedures, including legislative compliance and relevant government regulatory agencies. Gain knowledge to identify taxable earnings and benefits, determine statutory and non-statutory deductions, calculate net pay, prepare accounting payroll data and complete the prescribed forms and remittances required to be submitted by employers.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, students will have demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Apply provisions of the Employment Standards Act to ensure employers meet minimum requirements.
  2. Distinguish employment income by evaluating cash earnings, allowances, expenses and fringe benefits.
  3. Calculate statutory deductions (Canada Pension Plan, Employment Insurance & Income Taxes) using both Canada Revenue Agency payroll tables and the online calculator.
  4. Identify various non-statutory deductions for the purpose of calculating net pay.
  5. Complete an earnings record, by computing insurable/pensionable earnings and gross/net taxable income.
  6. Prepare government remittances using prescribed forms.
  7. Create a year-end payroll register, to finalize the payroll cycle and report T4 slips and a T4 summary.
  8. Determine Employer Health Tax and Workers Safety & Insurance Board levies, in accordance with provincial requirements.
  9. Construct payroll accounting journal entries and accruals.
  10. Administer employee terminations, by determining final payments owing and filing a Record of Employment.

Sanjay Bhatia

Sanjay Bhatia is a Chartered Professional Accountant with more than 15 years of international experience working in the fields of bookkeeping, accounting, taxation in the United States, India and Canada. He is passionate about developing technical and professional skills of students demanded by employers in today’s highly competitive industry. He believes in sharing his wealth of experience and knowledge by imparting result-oriented education to future professionals.

Sanjay has been teaching computerized accounting to students and he has taught various classes on accounting software, such as Sage 50. He is QuickBooks Desktop Certified and has also acquired certification in Sage Accounting. Sanjay worked at H&R Block for a few tax seasons and worked as an instructor imparting education and preparing future tax professionals to work during tax season.

Currently, Sanjay is working for a construction company handling the day to day office work and accounting for all its group companies and joint ventures. He also works part-time for a public accounting firm working on various projects ranging from bookkeeping to preparing taxes for corporations and individual taxation.

Egbal Eltahir

Egbal Eltahir obtained an MA in Economics from the University of Ottawa and an MSc in Accounting from KSU. She is also currently a PhD Candidate at the University of Walden. Egbal has extensive experience in lecturing, conducting economic research, accounting, taxation and financial services. She identifies as a quick learner with a proven ability to interpret and analyze complicated information. She often adapts by using various computer programs to improve work efficiency. Egbal is excited to be a faculty member at Ashton College, working with students to advance their careers.

    • Webinars will be held on Wednesdays from 5:00 to 8:00 pm PST.
    • Outside of live instructional periods, students will be expected to take part in various independent and/or group activities.

Technical Requirements

Live Online Students

Ashton College uses web conferencing tools for conducting online classes and online learning management systems for managing resources, assignments, and grades. These tools help instructors and students connect live online as well as asynchronously. The basic requirements for online learning include a computer, webcam, speakers, and a microphone or a headset and headphones, along with a reliable internet connection. Though online learning can be pursued using smartphones and tablets, the use of laptops or desktop computers is encouraged for an enhanced learning experience.


This course does not require approval by the Private Training Institutions Branch of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training. As such, it was not reviewed.
