Duolingo is the world's largest online language learning platform and the most downloaded education app in the world for both Android and iOS devices. Duolingo is a platform that includes a free language-learning app, a crowdsourced text translation platform, and a language proficiency assessment center.
The Duolingo Test Center provides scientifically-proven language certification. Duolingo’s Test Center exams are scientifically designed to provide a precise and accurate assessment of real world language ability. The exams feature computerized-adaptive testing, meaning the exam questions will automatically adapt to each test-takers' ability, generating different questions for every exam and making it impossible to memorize them all. Test Center English scores are significantly correlated with the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), providing reliable results as a fraction of the cost, while the online format increases convenience for test-takers.
Test-takers take the test while the camera and microphone on a phone or laptop records. After the test is completed, that video is then watched by a Duolingo proctor who ensures no testing violations have occurred. The video is then attached to the test-taker's digital certificate, so if someone tries to take the test for you, the fraud can be easily spotted by a university administrator or potential employer.
Students can take the exam on iOS and Android mobile devices, and on the web using the Chrome web browser. The Duolingo Proficiency exam takes about 20 minutes to complete, and test results are available within 48 hours.
