The Canada-B.C. Job Grant

The Canada-B.C. Job Grant is an employer-driven, cost-sharing skills training program aimed at supporting the training of British Columbians for available jobs, assisted by employers participating as partners in the skills training system and sharing the associated costs.

The grant covers up to two-thirds of the cost of training an employee, to a maximum of $10,000 per grant.

What Types of Training Programs are Eligible for the Canada-B.C. Job Grant?

A wide range of training is therefore eligible under the Grant. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Literacy and Essential Skills training;
  • Specialized or technical training, including short term certificates; and
  • Management or business training.

Eligible training must lead to an available job in BC. The training can take place in a variety of settings, including classroom, workplace or online. To be eligible, the training must be delivered by a BC thirdparty trainer that is independent of the employer and whose main business activity is to provide training, including but not limited to a university, community or career college, union training centre, industry association, or private trainer.

Eligible training costs include:

  • tuition fees or fees charged by a third-party training provider;
  • mandatory student fees;
  • fees for textbooks, software and other required materials; and
  • examination fees.

Who is Eligible to Apply for the Canada-B.C. Job Grant?

BC employers or organizations acting on behalf of employers in the private and not-for-profit sectors with a plan to train workers for new or better jobs in BC may apply for the Grant. Self-employed individuals and sole proprietorships can apply on their own behalf.

Employees must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be at least 15 years old;
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or Protected Persons (as designated under the Canada Immigration and Refugee Protection Act) entitled to work in Canada and holding a valid work permit,
  • Be pursuing training for a new job or a better job.

 

Approximately 900 British Columbians are expected to benefit from the Canada Job Grant this year, going up to about 3,500 people by the time it's fully implemented in 2017. If you think you may be eligible for the Canada-B.C. Job Grant, visit WorkBC for more information.
