Our advanced course is a more intensive course integrating all aspects of therapeutic recreation program delivery and the role of the Recreational Therapist in the implementation of program delivery. The course will focus on theory and practice in the various areas of core recreation programming taking into account the role of the Recreational Therapist.

Topics Covered/Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Utilize activity analysis and apply to program planning to work with people who may benefit form assistance to improve their quality of life.
  2. Evaluate and apply necessary adaptations and interventions to recreation and leisure opportunities to allow for full participation by individuals.
  3. Exhibit the ability to conduct risk assessment, and emphasize professional judgement and ethics.
  4. Implement program plans tailored to the clients needs and abilities.
  5. Employ purposeful modalities and facilitation techniques in the delivery of therapeutic recreation activities and/or programs to ensure successful treatment outcomes.
  6. Identify therapeutic recreation activities resources for clientele.
  7. Plan, implement and evaluate core program areas and related therapeutic recreation activities.

Johnathan Pathmanathan

Johnathan Pathmanathan is a recreation therapist with a Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation from Seneca College. Utilizing a person-centred and constructivist approach to teaching, he places an emphasis on ensuring that the classroom is a diverse and culturally supportive environment for his students to learn. In his spare time, Johnathan enjoys going out for hikes, exercising and finding the best places to eat in the city.

Who Will Benefit From The Course

This course provides additional and supplemental training for recreational therapists, kinesiologists, care aides, and foreign-trained health care professionals.


Live Online

Part Time:

  • May 13, 2021 – August 12, 2021
    • Students must devote at least 3 hours per week to attend live webinars
    • Webinars will be held on Thursdays from 5:00 to 8:00 pm PST
    • Outside of live instructional periods, students will be expected to take part in various independent and/or group activities

Ashton College uses web conferencing tools to help instructors and students connect and collaborate live online. For the online classes, students need to have a fully functional computer system with a webcam, speakers and microphone or headset and headphones, along with a reliable high-speed internet connection. Though the classes can be accessed using smartphones and tablets, we recommend using a laptop or desktop computer for a better learning experience.

This course does not require approval by the Private Training Institutions Branch of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training. As such, it was not reviewed.
