Overview

This course will introduce paralegals to Canadian Immigration Law principles. Commencing with an overview of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (“IRPA”), the course also examines the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the rules and procedures during hearings under the IRPA. This course will assist students in gaining both a theoretical and practical understanding of the basic elements of immigration law. Upon completion of this program, students will have obtained an excellent knowledge in immigration law practice and will be able to advance their careers in various phases of the immigration law process.

Course Prerequisites

Recommended three years relevant work experience as a Paralegal or Legal Assistant.

This course provides additional and supplemental training for those already in careers working such as a paralegal or legal assistant.

Topics Covered/Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to understand:

  • The principles of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
  • The procedures during hearings that are governed by the IRPA
  • The rules of the different divisions of the Immigration and Refugee Board
  • Discretionary decisions made by Immigration Officials and Tribunals

Ashton College uses web conferencing tools (Zoom for Education) to help instructors and students connect and collaborate live online. Students should have access to a computer, laptop or smartphone to access the class sessions. To be able to participate in webinars, students need a webcam and headset, or a microphone and headphones, along with a high-speed internet connection.

    • Students must devote at least 3 hours per week to attend live webinars.
    • Webinars will be held on Mondays from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm PST.
    • Outside of live instructional periods, students will be expected to take part in various independent and/or group activities.

Fees

Registration fee for this course is $495.

This course does not require approval by the Private Training Institutions Branch of the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills & Training. As such, it was not reviewed.
