Overview

This course provides a practical and structured introduction to the BC Building Code 2024 for individuals working in construction, renovation, inspection, design support, property management, and related fields in British Columbia. The course is intended to build working knowledge of how the Code is organized, how it is applied, and how key provisions affect real building decisions.

Participants will examine the legal and practical role of the BC Building Code 2024, including its scope, structure, objectives, and compliance framework. The course will focus on core Code concepts relevant to small buildings and common building situations, with attention to life safety, occupancy, fire protection, accessibility, building envelope considerations, energy efficiency, and code interpretation.

The course is designed for practical code literacy. It is not merely a high-level overview. It aims to help participants read the Code more confidently, understand how provisions are organized, recognize the purpose behind requirements, and apply Code concepts more effectively in professional settings.

Course Content

Module 1: Introduction to the BC Building Code 2024

This module introduces the purpose and function of the BC Building Code 2024 within the regulation of buildings in British Columbia. Participants will examine why building codes exist, the public interests they serve, and the role of the Code in supporting health, fire and structural safety, accessibility, and building performance.

Module 2: Structure of the Code – Divisions A, B, and C

This module examines how the Code is organized and how that structure supports its use as a professional reference document. Participants will become familiar with the basic framework of the Code and the distinct roles of its divisions.

Module 3: Scope, Application, and Defined Terms

Participants will review the scope of the Code and the importance of reading Code requirements in context. The module emphasizes the need to understand defined terms, application statements, and interpretive discipline before drawing conclusions from isolated provisions.

Module 4: Classification of Buildings and Occupancy Concepts

This module introduces basic building classification concepts that shape how Code requirements apply. Participants will examine how occupancy and building characteristics affect the regulatory treatment of a building.

Module 5: Compliance Framework, Objectives, and Acceptable Solutions

This module focuses on the logic of Code compliance. Participants will examine how objectives, functional statements, and acceptable solutions work together and why understanding this framework matters in practice.

Module 6: Fire Safety, Occupant Protection, and Means of Egress

This module introduces major life safety concepts found in the Code. Participants will consider how Code provisions seek to reduce fire risk, protect occupants, and support safe movement out of buildings.

Module 7: Health, Safety, and Accessibility Requirements

This module reviews key Code concepts related to safe and usable buildings. Participants will examine the broader role of the Code in promoting occupant health, accessibility, and safe building use.

Module 8: Building Envelope, Environmental Separation, and Moisture Awareness

This module introduces practical concepts affecting building durability and occupant protection through enclosure and separation requirements. The goal is not to turn the course into a specialist envelope course, but to give participants a grounded understanding of why these areas matter.

Module 9: Energy Efficiency and Building Performance

Participants will examine how energy efficiency fits into the BC Building Code 2024 and why energy-related provisions matter in modern building practice.

Module 10: Part 9 Small Buildings – Practical Code Awareness

This module provides a practical overview of the importance of Part 9 for common residential and small-building situations. It does not attempt to turn participants into designers, but it does orient them to the Code area most commonly encountered in many residential contexts.

Module 11: Alterations, Renovations, and Change of Occupancy

This module examines practical issues that arise when work is performed on existing buildings rather than new construction. Participants will review how code questions often become more complex in renovation settings.

Module 12: Applying the Code in Real-World Contexts

This module brings the course together by focusing on practical use of the Code in professional settings. Participants will work through common interpretation issues and learn how to approach the Code in a more disciplined, confident way.

Module 13: Review and Consolidation

The final module consolidates the major concepts covered throughout the course and reinforces the participant’s ability to approach the BC Building Code 2024 as a usable, structured professional document.
