As a Red Seal Plumber, it is my responsibility to ensure that installations are performed according to good practice along with provincial and federal plumbing code standards. Safety always lies at the forefront of every job. In general, a good technician cares for those around them. For example, as they value the safety and wellbeing of workmates, they will ensure they’re properly informed as to the repair or installation process and tools involved. The safety of any public that may interact with the work environment is also of paramount concern.
While the Red Seal Exam for Plumbers can prove very challenging it ensures a standard awareness of plumbing practices across Canada. I have found that investment of time and energy in study is one of the most helpful tools to pass this challenging examination.
Although many aspects of the trade have brought me satisfaction throughout the years, perhaps the greatest source of fulfillment, for myself, comes from training others. I find it gratifying to be able to explain concepts to others in a way that they can easily grasp. It also makes me happy to see others benefit from the knowledge that they acquire.
Good planning. Willingness to learn. Solid leadership skills.
It ensures that I can seek employment across Canada without the need to recertify in any other provinces or jurisdictions. The endorsement also means that no matter which part of Canada I work in I can expect a certain standard of workmanship. This familiarity allows for any Red Seal Technician to easily adapt to new work environments in each province.
As is the case for many, I have had my share of decisions made on the job that I quickly came to regret. One example that comes to mind is a job request that involved changing a kitchen sink faucet. Although all isolation valves had been properly closed, the valves themselves had failed and no longer isolated the faucet from water pressure in the house's water supply. Because of this when I removed the faucet piping supply piping it opened live water pressure to open air, not a fun experience. However, I did learn a vital lesson that is likely crucial to all industries. That is to always ensure the integrity of what you are working on and that it is doing what it is supposed to. In this case, to check that isolation valves were indeed isolating the water pressure and hadn’t failed.
Success in the industry is accomplishing the goals that you have set for yourself. These goals vary from technician to technician. Often the best way to accomplish these goals is a willing spirit and hard work.
Take charge of your career path by investing a significant amount of time to study and memorization. Perhaps, more than any other time in your career these two things are very important.
I feel that I have been able to accomplish many things in my career. Honestly though, I feel I need to give credit to the many mentors who have helped me accomplish these goals. These mentors have been both within and outside the plumbing industry. Many have contributed to my success over the years.
