“One skill I have learned, and I still use now, is to find meaning in what I do” – Julia Bonilla, 2024

What Makes the Experience as a Unit Clerk at Burnaby Hospital So Rewarding?

So far, my experience as a Nursing Unit Clerk at Burnaby Hospital has been great. Although, it has given me a few learning curves, it has been positive, and rewarding. When I first applied for the Nursing Unit Clerk for the Pre-Admission Clinic in Surgical, I was aware not only of the qualifications, but also about the duties, the responsibilities and the expectations needed for this position. I knew it was a big step to launch into a new job, however, I was ready for the challenge!

Why I Chose Ashton College

To be quite honest, I did not know about Ashton College until I started searching for Post Secondary Education that offered the Unit Coordinator/Unit Clerk program.  I knew about a few known Institutions in the Lower Mainland that offered it, but at that time, I was working full time and I needed to find a school that would offer this program that suited my schedule.  Then I found Ashton College while searching the Internet. I was so thrilled when I was finally informed the college would start the Unit Clerk program even with a small class in September 2022!

How Does Ashton College Ensure a Comprehensive Learning Experience?

My experience at Ashton College was significant.  What I like about Ashton College is the experienced faculty and the advantage to complete a program online. After a busy 8-hour workday, I looked forward to my class, because I was fortunate to have an amazing and experienced Instructor, Ms. T.  She was not only a caring Instructor, but approachable and respectful of her students.  Also, she efficiently taught and explained the material in a practical manner, which would make my learning experience enjoyable and effective. I was able to use some of my class-acquired knowledge during my practicum. My practicum placement prepared me for my actual job at the hospital. I was able to find my practical placement just a couple of weeks before my final exam. The Ashton College Practicum Coordinator helped me in this process, which I am grateful for.

What Are the Achievements and Challenges of Working as a Unit Clerk?

As unit Clerk, one of the achievements that keeps me grounded and motivated to continue with my career path is to have been able to be employed immediately after my practicum.

I think every job has its challenges; the attitude one chooses to face these challenges makes the difference.  In my personal experience, as a Unit Clerk, I have faced a few.  I guess a big one has been working with difficult and uncooperative people.  My Instructor at Ashton College talked to me and my classmates about this in class.  I am grateful she shared this with us; and how she overcame these challenges.  I sure learned a lot from her!

Which Essential Skills and Advice Can Help Aspiring Unit Clerks Succeed?

One skill I have learned, and I still use now, is to find meaning in what I do, especially at work. To keep learning and to always give the best I have to be proficient.

Almost everything is about the attitude you choose to have towards doing something or facing a challenge.  One needs to find what they’re passionate about and make it their own research (pros & cons).

If doing the Unit clerk job is what you are passionate about, then go for it! While at this job, be proactive in doing professional development as this will open other doors within your career path.

Once, I heard someone say: “you can’t do any career advancement being a Unit Clerk” I do not agree with this poor statement. Being a Unit Clerk is the beginning of your career path.  Always work efficiently and honestly, search for opportunities, stay positive, talk to key people, keep moving forward, motivate others, and keep learning, the sky is the limit!
