The first step is deciding which skilled trade to pursue. Not all trades are part of the Red Seal program, so it’s important to check the official list of designated Red Seal trades. Choosing a Red Seal trade ensures your training is based on national standards and gives you the opportunity to earn the Red Seal endorsement later on.
Once you’ve chosen a trade, the next step is to secure an apprenticeship with an employer who can sponsor your training. Apprenticeships combine paid, on-the-job experience with technical training delivered through a college or training institution. You’ll also need to register your apprenticeship with your provincial or territorial apprenticeship authority so your progress is officially tracked.
Apprenticeships typically last two to five years, depending on the trade. Most of your time will be spent learning directly on the job under the supervision of a certified tradesperson. You’ll also complete blocks of in-class or online technical training that cover the theory and applied skills needed in your trade. Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll log your hours and competencies to show you’re meeting program requirements.
When you’ve finished your required hours and training, you’ll apply to your apprenticeship authority to have your program marked complete. This usually involves verifying your training records and submitting a completion form signed by your employer. Once approved, you’ll receive a Certificate of Apprenticeship, an important milestone that marks you as a trained tradesperson in your field.
With your apprenticeship complete, you may now be eligible to write the Red Seal exam. Applications are submitted through your provincial or territorial authority, which will confirm you meet the requirements. In some cases, tradespeople who are already certified may also apply to write the Red Seal exam even after working for a number of years.
The Red Seal exam is based on the Red Seal Occupational Standard for your trade, so preparing with study guides, practice questions, and review resources is highly recommended. Many candidates also choose to take an exam preparation course, which can provide structure, guidance, and practice strategies to help boost confidence before test day.
After passing the exam, your provincial or territorial certificate will be marked with the Red Seal endorsement. This nationally recognized seal confirms you have met the Canadian standard for your trade and supports labour mobility — making it easier to work across provinces and territories without additional certification.
Earning your Red Seal isn’t just about passing an exam; it’s about gaining recognition as a highly skilled professional in your trade. The endorsement shows employers and clients that you’ve achieved the highest national standard, giving you more opportunities and flexibility in your career.
